Excitation and deexcitation: Day 1, P1
Let there be light!
Introduction
So far the only way we've seen for an atom to go from an excited state to
the ground state is for it to collide with another atom and give up its
stored energy that way. But there's another way for an atom to shed its
energy. It can give off light!
(We can probably find a better picture.)
Today we're going to learn more about how atoms interact with light. In particular, we will learn two things:
1) Atoms emit light of particular colors and the exact colors depend on the type of atom -- each type is different.
2) Atoms also absorb light, but they can only absorb light of the same color that they emit.
