Excitation and deexcitation: Day 1, P1
Atoms Can be Excited (and Exciting!)
Different atoms have different energy levels.
We've added a new feature to the model below: an energy level diagram. It shows two energy levels -- a ground state (-4 electron-volts) and an excited state (-0.2 electron volts) of the purple atom.
Run the model and see what happens.

Experiment and see if you can find a setting where the purple atom will go
into the excited state when it is hit by the green atom.

What is the highest energy you can give to the purple atom's excited state and still have it be excited when the green atom collides with it?

Sometimes the excited atom goes back to the ground state during a collision. Run the model until this happens, then stop the model and run the movie back to that point to study the collision in detail. What happens to the two atoms after the collision? Is energy conserved in a collision of this kind? Explain your answer.
