Conclusion
Let's summarize what we've learned...
1) The state of a substance is determined in part by the strength of the intermolecular forces between particles. The strongest attractive forces will result in solids at room temperature and the weakest forces will result in gases at room temperature.
2) The types of motion that are allowed differ in the three states. Gases can undergo vibrational, rotational and translational motion. Liquids are restricted to primarily vibrational and rotational motion. Solids only have vibrational motion.
3) The addition of heat allows for more types of motion. Thus, solids can melt into liquids, and liquids can vaporize into gases when sufficient heat is added.
If you understand all this, you should easily be able to predict what would happen as the temperature of a system drops. Answer the following questions.
