Newton's laws
tell us how objects move and respond to forces. Usually, we only consider
how these laws apply to objects we can see: planets, cars, baseballs. If
you look around you now, it doesn't appear that many of the objects in the
room are in motion or have forces applied to them (except for the
gravitational force keeping everything on the ground).

One thing
you don't realize is that there is an enormous amount of moving, and
colliding, with forces being exerted in many directions. You just don't
see it because it is happening at the atomic level. Everything you see
and even the air is made from atoms (and molecules which are groups of
atoms). They are so small and moving so fast that about 10 billion
billion molecules of air hit every square inch of your body every second.

been slowed down a billion times so you can see more than just a blur on
the screen. Run the model to "ride along" with an atom as it
moves through the air. Currently, you are riding on a single
atom of argon (1% of air is argon).

If you want
to ride on a different atom, perhaps one that is part of a molecule,
then stop the model and shift-control-click
on an atom and select "attach camera" from the popup menu. However, if
you ride an atom that is bonded to other atoms then you will also "feel"
the internal vibrations of the molecule.
