You have seen that when a pendulum is released from a higher position, it
moves faster and faster until it reaches the vertical position. As you
know, higher speed means higher kinetic energy. So where does the
increased kinetic energy come from? You have probably known the answer: it
is the gravity. The energy that comes from gravity is called the
gravitational potential energy. The gravitational potential energy
converts to the kinetic energy when the pendulum swings. In the pendulum
model on the right, we will review this process.
