We are used to thinking about energy at our human scale when we see
thunderclouds develop, a race car move, or a plant grow. Learning about
energy at the atomic-scale can help you understand those changes at a more
profound level.<br><br>Different kinds of energy include light, heat,
chemical change, and kinetic (energy of motion). While we focus only on
the energy of motion here, much that you learn can be applied to the other
forms of energy.<br><br>The energy of motion can assume one of two forms:
active and potential, depending on whether it is at work, or stored in
position and ready to go to work. Energy is always changing back and forth
between these two states. In the process the energy of a system is
conserved.The goal of this activity is to explore energy changes between
potential to kinetic states, as well as energy conservation with objects
at both the human and atomic scale.
