When we burn wood, it emits some invisible energy packets, which are
called photons. Photons can travel through space without having to
involve atoms. Our body can absorb some of them and in turn heat up from
the energy of the photons. The emission of photons due to heating is
called thermal radiation.

In the following model, you can heat the material in the compartment on
the right, which will emit photons (represented by squiggles ⇝). Some
photons will travel to the material in the compartment on the left, be
absorbed and heat it up.

Note that in this simulation, the speed of light is slowed down
significantly so that you can see photons.
What to do: 1) Click
the "Heat the yellow atoms" button to start the model. Note the dotted
lines around certain atoms. Those atoms are excited and will emit photons.
2) Click the "K.E. Shading" button. 3) Click the "Heat the yellow atoms"
button one or two more times. 4) Watch what happens to the kinetic energy
of the solid on the left side of the model.

Thermal radiation is the way the sun transfers a tremendous amount of
energy to the earth. How to make efficient use of the solar energy is an
important topic today, as the energy and environmental issues become
more and more pressing.
