Every amino acid has a part that is that is unique, called the <b>side
chain</b>, and a part that is the same in all the amino acids, which
will become part of the protein <b>backbone</b>. The side chains give
proteins their distinct abilities and functions, and help the protein to
fold into the correct shape. The backbone atoms of the amino acids link together together to form the string of protein. Different proteins are
made by stringing together different numbers and types of amino acids.
