The key to understanding the structure and function of nucleic acids is
to understand <b>complementarity</b>. When two nucleotides bind strongly
to each other, they are said to be complementary. The following model
shows the four nucleotides: A, C, G, and T. You can drag them around.
(Click on an atom in the molecule, hold the mouse button down and drag
it around the screen.) Whenever there is a strong interaction between a
pair of atoms, there will be a dotted line.<br><br>Drag each nucleotide
near each of the others, one at a time. Which
nucleotides interact strongly with (are complementary to) each other? How many interactions form between the complementary pairs?

DNA molecules are capable of replicating themselves. The replication
process starts with a single DNA strand as the template. Free
nucleotides that come to bind with their complementaries, and with the
aid of an enzyme called the DNA polymerase, they also join to form a new
strand. The new strand carries exactly the same genetic information, all
due to the complementarity.<br><br>In the following model, use what you
have learned from the previous section and drag the molecules in the
upper part to the green circles (the positions in the new strand) so
that they correctly bind with their complementary ones in the lower part
(the template strand), as shown by the example of the G-C pair on the
