into each other constantly. If their surfaces fit well together, <a href="script:page:0:message definition-intermolAttractions.html">intermolecular
attractions</a> will form between them, and they will remain together
temporarily. For example, the blood protein hemoglobin carries oxygen
from your lungs to all the cells of the body. Hemoglobin recognizes
oxygen and not most other molecules because the oxygen molecule fits
snugly into a cavity in the protein.

<p>
<b>What to do:</b> Using the select <img src="selectObject.gif"> and
rotate <img src="rotateObject.gif"> buttons in the model below, place 3
small molecules onto the protein so they they fit well together, forming
a complex. Then test your complex - see the directions inside the model.

The more intermolecular attractions that form, the better the molecules bind to each other. When the surfaces of the two molecules fit together well, it brings them close enough for intermolecular attractions to form.
