UTF-8Boyle's Law Non-ideal Gas Behavior
The Ideal Gas Law is based on two assumptions, which in fact are never really true:
1. That the gas molecules have zero volume.
2. That the gas molecules do not attract each other at all, although they do repel each other at very short distances.
The farther apart the gas molecules are the smaller their actual volumes are compared to the volume of the container and so a gas behaves more and more ideally the smaller the ratio of the volume occupied by the molecules to the volume of the container. On page 2 we will look at the effect of molecular attractions.
Here we will look at the effect of molecular size.
What happens if a gas has very large molecules compared to the size of the container? Does Avogadro's Hypothesis still hold? Here we will simulate equal numbers of gas particles at the same pressure and temperature that have the same molecular = 16 grams/mole but that have very different diameters and so occupy different MOLECULAR volumes.
The gas particles on the left have molecular weight = 16 grams/mole.
The gas particles on the left have molecular weight = 16 grams/mole.
The pressure is the same in each cylinder because the piston in each case has the same mass.
The temperature is also the same in each cylinder (see the thermometer).
Each container has the same number of particles (25). Does each container have the same number of moles of gas?
