In the picture below you will see the plasma (cell) membrance, a protein channel, and large ions.
These ions can not pass by themselves so they need help from the protein channel to get into and out of the cell.
This process is called facilitated diffusion.
It is diffusion because ions are moving from a high concentration to a low concentration, but it is facilitated because the proteins are helping. No enery (ATP) is required for this process.
