This is a good guess, but it is somewhat incorrect.  It is true that gases do not conduct (the ammeter recorded zero when gas was present).  However, to say that the particles are completely unaffected by an electric field would be inaccurate. The electron cloud of a molecule is very likely to be influenced by any electric field somewhat.  However, this influence is minimal compared to the affect seen with fully charged particles, like free electrons and cations.
