This is incorrect. Gases are nonconductors (the current stayed at zero when a gas occupied the container). If you go back and review the model, the gas particles had random movement in spite of the electric field (i.e. the electric field had essentially no effect on the particles). This is observed because gas molecules are neutral, not charged.
