There are two sources of electric fields, those caused by
flowing electric currents, and those caused by magnetic
materials.

The Earth's core contains liquid iron which
flows due to the Earth's rotation and heat convection below the
mantle. Some of the iron is in an ionic state so that electric
currents are generated within it. This is what gives the Earth
its magnetic field and why we can use a compass to orient
ourselves relative to this field.

Permanent magnets are
made from materials like solid iron, nickel, cobalt, and alloys
of those metals. In these materials atoms have unpaired
electrons that, on average, have their spins aligned in a
particular direction, causing a North and South magnetic pole to
form within the substance.
