currents can generate magnetic fields, so passing electricity
through a wire generates a magnetic field surrounding the wire. The
field vectors are perpendicular to the wire as you can see with the
single loop of current carrying wire. If we use many coils of wire
we can create a region inside the loops where the magnetic field is
uniform (all pointing in a straight line in the same direction). </span>

Magnetic (and electric fields) are three dimensional. Until now we have
looked at 2-D cross sections of those fields. To the right is a 3D
picture of a uniform field. Electrons tend to do move perpendicular to
the magnetic field lines, so we will study their movement in uniform
magnetic fields that are either pointing out of the screen or pointing
into the screen.
