Electrons in atoms have "energy states." The lowest one is called the
"ground" state; the higher ones are called "excited" states. An electron
can make transitions between two states. <i>When an electron of an atom is

electron). The unit of the energy is electron volt -- the amount of
energy needed for a single electron to move up a volt.
