Writing a hypothesis
A hypothesis is a statement of what you think you will learn from the data in your experiment.
It is a statement based on what you already know. But it doesn't have to be something you are completely sure about. In other words, it is your best guess.
Once written, the hypothesis can't be changed. But you can write a new hypothesis and go on to a new round of testing. (It is okay, and often very useful, to find out something different than what you expected.)
A formal hypothesis does not contain the words "I think." It is most often written in an if/then statement. The structure of a formal hypothesis is useful because it makes you focus on several variables that may be related.
Below is an example:
"If fermentation rate is related to temperature, then increasing the temperature will increase gas production.
