it. A <b>pigment</b> is a molecule that absorbs photons of visible
light of certain frequencies, letting the others reach our eyes
unchanged. On the left is an example of a pigment with light of
different colors shining on it. The pigment absorbs the photons of
red and green light and reflects the blue light. Plants have
pigments that make their leaves look green. </span>

<b>What photons do leaves absorb?</b> Most plants have thin and flat
leaves that maximally expose their cells to sunlight. Leaves, however,
do not absorb all frequencies of visible photons. If they did, the world
would be dull -- leaves would all look black or gray.<br><br>On the
right is a virtual experiment involving a green leaf and a red leaf. A
light filter is placed at the right edge of the compartment to control
the frequency of light that shines into the compartment.
