Through photosynthesis plants convert the energy of sunlight to
chemical energy stored in plants. In this activity you explored
how certain molecules, the pigments, interact with light and
determine the color of plants. Every time a pigment molecule such
as chlorophyll interacts with light, one of the pigment's
electrons gains energy and is raised from a low energy state to a
higher energy state. However, the energy of the light photon must
be equal to the difference of energy levels found in the molecule.
This light-matter interaction begins the process of photosynthesis.
