UTF-8Chemical Reactions: Equilibrium227223152
Reaction Rates, Catalysis, and Energy: Equilibrium.
Below is a model containing reactants which will form the reaction: A2 + B2 --> 2 AB. However, you can adjust the bond strengths of A-A, B-B, and A-B, and explore how this affects the reaction. You should be able to find settings where the reaction goes in both directions: A2 + B2 2 AB.
EXPERIMENTING WITH THE MODEL
1. Run the model to see the "normal" reaction in which A2 and B2 react to form AB.
2. Experiment with adjusting the bond strengths of A2, B2, and AB to see how this affects the reaction.
3. Try to make the reaction go completely to the left (all A2 and B2), all to the right (all AB), or somewhere in between.

<font size="4" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Many of the
reactions in your body don't follow the one-way pattern which starts with
one chemical (or set of chemicals) that react to form a different chemical
(or set of chemicals). Often a reaction can happen both ways at the same
time. If the reactants form products just as fast as products form
reactants, then you have an equilibrium reaction. Many reactions in your
body occur this way to maintain a state of balance or equilibrium. The
precise blood pH level in your body is maintained in this manner.</font>
