the periodic table was set up using atomic mass, density, and
chemical formulas. That first table is very close to our modern
table. It is amazing that a similar table was made before they even
knew about the structure of the atom. Only properties of atoms were
used.</font>

realize that it is the structure of the atoms themselves which gives
the atoms their properties. Let's look at one simple property - the
size of an atom, and see how it relates to our understanding of
electron orbitals. Like boron on the previous page, the best
estimate of the size of an atom is the highest energy level s
orbital, so that is the default orbital shown when you click on an
atom. However, a list of all the orbitals/energy levels that have
electrons is shown when you click on that element. <strong>Click on
