Kinetic energy: Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. The kinetic energy of molecules and ions is intrinsically linked to their temperature, energy content and reactivity. For a chemical reaction to occur:
there must be collisions between atoms or molecules,
the colliding atoms or molecules must collide with the correct orientation and,
the colliding atoms or molecules must have sufficient kinetic energy (otherwise they simply rebound, rather than react).
What do we know about the kinetic energy of atoms and molecules?
The average kinetic energy of atoms/molecules can be measured in terms of temperature. Particles with a high temperature have a greater kinetic energy than particles with a low temperature. For example, as the temperature of a gas increases, the molecules move faster, as their kinetic energy increases.
In a closed room it is assumed that the temperature is same everywhere. What happens if you open a door between a hot room and a cold room? Lets examine this by studying the following model:
Activity 1
Click the “Heat the left chamber” and “Cool the left chamber” tabs at the bottom of the simulation screen to study what occurs when there is no barrier between a hot room and a cold room. Do the same for the right chamber.
Tick on the “K.E. Shading” (Kinetic Energy Shading) tab. Particles with high kinetic energy are shaded red, while those with lower energy are white. Note how the shading changes as the chamber contents are heated and cooled.
While running the simulation, take snapshots of the imporatant moments and changes of the simulation. Once you take a snapshot, a textbox will appear to you. Please explin briefly why do you thing the changes are imporatnt.
