The learning goals for tonight's activity include:
- Be able to describe the behavior of a system of one type of particle as either gaseous, liquid or solid
- Be able to manipulate particle properties and/or the potential energy function for their interaction to change
the 'state' of the particles (gas --> liquid --> solid) without changing particle size or the temperature.
Observe the particles in the simulation below. Describe how the particles behave and whether this behavior
is more like that of a gas, liquid or solid. Explain why using complete sentences with specific details.
The behavior of the particles is more like a gas because of the lack of bonding between the individual molecules. The kinetic energy of the particles is higher than the intermolecular bonds that hold them together.
Make a change(s) that cause the molecules to behave more like a liquid without changing the particle
diameter or the temperature of the system. Describe with complete sentences and specific details
why the behavior of the system after your changes is more like a liquid.
To make the molecules in the system interact more like a liquid I choose to lower the electrostatic potential energy minima to approximately -0.4 eV. By lowering the electrostatic potential energy minima I made the bonds between the individual particles stronger. This made it harder for the intermolecular bonds to be broken by the kinetic energy. The minima was high enough though to prevent the particles from forming a solid.
Repeat the above for a solid.
To create a solid I lowered the electrostatic potential energy minima to approximately -0.6 eV, increased the mass per mole to25,000g/mol, and increased the external forces in the x and y to 1000. The stronger bonds between the molecules required higher amounts of energy to separate the particles and the increased mass per moles and external forces forced the particles to form a solid that it otherwise might not have.
