UTF-8Glucose Trapping in Cell
Your name:_________________
Background: Glucose molecules from digested food reache our cells through the bloodstream.
They freely diffuse through special Glucose Transporter proteins embedded in cell membranes.
But they can also diffuse back out of cells as shown when you run this simulation.
Your Challenge: Figure out a way to trap the Glucose molecules (Green) inside the cell.
The Cell membrane is the yellow boundary separating the Cell's inside from the outside.
The membrane contains Glucose Transport proteins shown as purple blobs that have channels
that allow only glucose to cross the membrane. But these are passive channels and glucose can pass
through in either direction.
Rules: Save the simulation on your computer so you can edit it. You can add other molecules to the simulation
but you aren't allowed to change the the membrane or channels or change or move the glucose molecules.
You can't directly change the temperature.
Steps: 1) Come up with a concept/strategy. Explain your plan and why you think it will work.
2) Figure out how to make your plan work using the simulation tools of MW.
3) Add your name to your simulation, then save and test your simulation. Make any necessary adjustments
if it doesn't work perfectly. After running a reasonable length of time, the glucose molecules should spontaneously
get trapped inside the cell!
4) Upload your saved, edited simulation to your MW webpage and post your link in Canvas.
